It is 1798, and Hillary Belsingham, recently returned from
Constantinople, finds himself once more in Newcastle, in the North East
of England. His mother has died and he must settle matters. But why has
he been away for so long? Like his father, he is a rake, albeit a
reluctant one, well aware of the wheel of joy and misery to which he
finds himself bound. Unlike his father, however, he possesses a
sensibility that knows there is a home truth he must face, a truth from
which he has always suspected he'd been running. Now, back home and with
children still disappearing in Hodburn Wood, he finds he can no longer
ignore what lies in the heart of his soul.

I read this book as a Kindle download with the agreement to review it. It really wasn't my usual genre at all, but I do like historical mysteries. I felt this was as much a "bodice ripper" romance as it was a mystery, but perhaps that is due to my unfamiliarty with romance novels. The storyline is dark and involves sodomy, rape, prostitutes, kidnapping, homosexuality, plight of the poor, etc. Not much uplifting there at all! The writing itself wasn't bad, but at times the shifting between character points of view and back and forth in time could be almost confusing. Almost, but not quite. There were several characters that were likable enough, but none that I could really root for as the "hero" of the story.
All in all, I would have to say "not bad, but not great." It was worth finishing, but not worth paying full price for. (Though at the time of this writing it is only 2.99 for Kindle. It might be worth that.)

Hodburn Wood edition by JM TysonCapper Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Downloaded this in Heathrow en route to Turkey and finished it by the time we landed, though we were delayed 4hours! A good rattling read. I love historical mysteries and since I was at uni in Newcastle I thought I'd give it a go. Not one for dissecting books really, but the opening scene is shocking and thereafter the story dives into the world of Hillary Belsingham. Wasn't sure what to make of him to start with, but he's almost immediately caught up with a plot of missing children that is really fast paced and I ended up feeling for him in the end. Would recommend it - a good read.
This is a really compelling book. I found myself drawn in to the strange and disturbing lot that belongs to Hilary Belsingham. Hilary is a typical 18c rake. One eye on the strumpets and the other on his opportunities. I won't spoil the plot but Belsingham changes as things happen to him. I liked the way that Hilary's vice was used to help him gain a deeper understanding of himself. I could relate to the male sexuality theme. The fact that a lot of men are controlled by their male members/confusing love for lust etc. The writing, itself does'nt get in the way of the story either. Its transparant prose worked really well. The story almost tells itself. Some memorable lines such as" Her breasts fell to two curved points wobbling like firm jelly and her hair stuck out comically. In that moment ,he saw through her, himself, and before him stood a young woman whoring to make ends meet. Good stuff. A VERY promising debut and addition to the genre.
